Mr.Gutteridge's Career

Mr. Alan Gordon Gutteridge , who has been invited by the Queensland Govern-ment to investigate questions of water supply, is director of the division of sanitary engineering in the Commonwealth Department of Health. Mr. Gutteridge was born in Victoria in 1892, and attend-ed the Melbourne Grammar School, after wards proceeding to the Melbourne University, where he gained the degree of Bachelor of Civil Engineering. He travelled extensively in Europe and America, gaining engineering experience. At the outbreak of war he was in America, and enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force for service in France. Amongst his military experience was that of being cappured and held as a prisoner of war in, Germany. Returning to Australia after the Armistice. Mr. Gutteridge joined the Harbours Department in Victoria, and subsequently was appointed to the then newly-formed division of sanitary engineering of the Commonwealth Department of Health. He has already had experience in Queensland, having been chairman of a Royal Commission on Sanitation appointed by the Government of Victoria in 1926, which visited Queensland, and having also advised on schemes of water supply and sewerage at Toowoomba, Rockhampton, and elsewhere. Mr. Gutteridge has made a special study of the engineering and health aspects of water supplies in Europe, America, and Australia, and is a recognised authority on these subjects.
