Military Notes

Friends have received word of the circumstances of the death of Herbert Anselm Nethercot, well-known to friends at Red Deer, Blackfalds, and Sylvan Lake [Alberta].

He was shot by a German sniper while mounting guard on the night on 17th and 18th May. He had been specially chosen to occupy a very dangerous post 30 yards from the enemy trench. An attack had been repelled during the afternoon and a sharp look out had to be kept as further attacks were expected. It is assumed that in his eagerness to discharge his duty efficiently the poor chap must have inadvertently exposed himself, thus giving the sniper a chance. He formerly belonged to the Royal Volunteer Naval Reserve and had been captain of a 6 inch gun crew.
