SOUVENIRS EXHIBITED
Rose Avenue School Bazaar Decorated With Many Trophies Sent Home From France.
Riverdale, Nov. 5. -- Some curious and interesting war souvenirs were exhibited at the bazaar held in Rose avenue school on Saturday to raise funds for the sending of Christmas boxes to the boys in the trenches. From Saloniki came a piece of a German Zeppelin made into a pen and paper knife; a French rosary from Signaller Royal, who was in the battle of the Somme, and a French glass vase picked up in a German dugout at Vimy Ridge.
One exhibit which caused some laughter was a tag found attached to a German sausage, discovered also in a German dugout. The tag bore the name of Fritz Ahrberg, and it was Pte. Norman Mahaffy who sent this home.
There were several German buckles upon which were stamped the usual "Gott Mitt Uns."
Perhaps the most interesting of all the exhibits were those of W. A. Meyrick of the 87th Canadian Grenadier Guards, who joined as a private, and who won a commission on the field of bravery and was awarded the Military Medal, which his mother now proudly exhibits to her friends. Lieut. Meyrick is now promoted to intelligence officer in the Imperial army. He captured a German officer while in the act of flashing signals with a flare pistol. That flare pistol together with his cap and field glasses, are now in the possession of Mrs. Meyrick; the German officer is no more.
A handsome French silk cushion cover sent from the city of Ypres, and ornamented with valuable French lace, with an engraving of "Les Halles d'Ypres" (Cloth Hall), was also recently sent home by Lieut. Meyrick as a souvenir. This gallant soldier and dutiful son is an ex-pupil of Rose avenue school.
