Pte. Arthur James Hay, a native of Toronto, was one of four brothers who enlisted for military service: Sapper Thomas Hay, Canadian Engineers, and Lance Corporal George Hay, Canadian Buffs. A younger brother, David A. Hay, served with the P.P.C.L.I., but was discharged as underage. The family home was at 93 Euclid avenue in Toronto.
Hay originally enlisted with the 42nd Regiment at Smiths Falls, Ontario.

Pte. A. J. Hay and Two Others Beat Overwhelming Numbers - D.C.M. for Toronto Private.
L.-Corp. Thomas Johnston who recently returned from the front bringing with him the D.C.M. won by his chum, Pte. A. J. Hay of 93 Euclid ave. News of the deed which one the coveted award is also to hand. The official report states that Pte. Hay received his decoration for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. With one other man he followed his officer into a dugout; the occupants resisted and the situation was critical. After a fight they succeeded in capturing 75 men and two officers with two machine guns and much ammunition.
Pte. Hay was born in Toronto and is 21 years of age. He was gassed on Sept. 5 at Lens. He has two brothers overseas, Sapper Thomas Hay, Canadian Engineers, and L.-Corp. George Hay, Canadian Buffs1. His younger brother, David A. Hay, served with the P.P.C.L.I. and was discharged from France.
