Arthur, son of James Chambers, was on the ship that arrived last week with disabled soldiers from the front. He was wounded in the knee.
Dr. Albert Shanks, the A1 of lacrosse fame, arrived at his mother's on Monday. He went over with the First Contingent from Winnipeg and has been in hospital service since, mostly in the great military hospital at Hastings, England. Suffering from a trouble received in performing his duties as a surgeon he has got a furlough. On recovering he will go back. He represents the people of England as set in purpose to win the war and straining every nerve to that end. There is no lack of food. Sugar is scarce and is doled out in small quantities. Instead of butter, margarine is in common use, and he has no fault to find with it. Airship raids are terrific in the noise they evoke. The firing of guns to bring them down and shooting of guns overhead combine to make a din louder than the worst thunderstorm. There is no concealment of the damage done by these raids. The sight of woman doing work before monopolized by men is the most apparent outward sign of the nation being at war.
