The black bread and the monotonous soup are the chief complaints of the British soldiers, who have been accustomed to a higher standard of living than obtains in Germany. Prisoners are allowed 2,700 calories (heat units) of food a day. The menu for one day given by “A Neutral”, is as follows:
Bread, 10 ounces
Potatoes, 1 lb 4 ounces
Dry vegetables, 1 ¼ ounces
Margarine, ½ ounce
Preserved vegetables, 3 ¾ ounces
This makes 2,889 calories at a cost of 14 cents. Bread is the only food given in solid form. Everything else is boiled into a thick soup, which is given at all meals. The only utensils allowed are a metal spoon and a metal plate. Through the representations of the American Ambassador the average calories per day has been slightly increased. Many of the prisoners are employed on farms.
