Dear Sir,

Received parcel or rather Xmas Stocking this A.M. Rather late but we have an awful poor mail service over hear [sic]. But very much pleased to know I am not forgotten by Members of Stewarton Church. Every article in Stocking is just what we want. Many thanks.

I have already had a trip to France for a few weeks. Things are very much in our favor over their [sic] now. Nothing but big and small guns looking towards German lines. It is impossible for them to advance, sure death to any who try. Every one I was in conversation with in France seems to think war will be over not later than August or Sept. at the latest. I should like to have a little more experience before I return. I met several prisoners that the Canadian troops had taken and they are certainly all disgusted and praying for war to end. Some very fine fellows but all are compelled to take up arms. They are surrendering in small groups when ever they get a chance but some of the boys always like to try his luck at them while they are coming over. They all say it keeps down expenses.

The spirit of our boys are always at top notch, no one grumbling and all wishing for the chance to get after the Huns. But the trenches are in dreadful shape. Mud and water, waste [sic] deep some place. And we have plenty of good company. Trenches are alive with rats and verman [sic]. So always on the look out and never lonesome. I myself with several other N.C.O. have been brought back to England to take different courses. We expect to be held in England as Instructors for some time. I have just heard of the fire on the Hill in Ottawa. All Ottawa boys in camp are all well. We have had some terrible weather over hear [sic]. Rains almost every day since we arrived, nearly four months ago. I hear from Mrs. Graham every week, they are all well and getting along as well as can be expected during my absence. Neibours [sic] she says are all very kind to her. Have you called on your annual visits yet. You will find a Christening waiting for you. I will have to conclude for now as time to fall in once again. Thanking youse [sic] for your kind Rememberence [sic]. I remain as ever.

The letter is a fine example of the YMCA stationary for Canadian troops. Links to the original documents:
