Letters From the Front

Unnamed British Soldier

A letter home from a Scottish soldier describing the Christmas truce.

Huntingdon Gleaner    Published:

The following is an extract from a letter from an unnamed Scottish soldier serving in the B.E.F. at the front.

Dated:

In a letter to his sisters in Edinburgh a young soldier writes:

Got your parcel. The socks and wristlets are ripping. They will never leave my person except on washing day. It was very quiet here on Xmas day. There was no fighting at all. Both sides were burying their dead. Where we are there is only about 100 yards between the German trenches and ours. Our fellows and the Germans met unarmed, halfway between, and wished each other the compliments of the season and exchanged souvenirs. Our parson and a German one held a joint service. There was an interpreter there and what our parson said was repeated and vice versa. Today they are exchanging bullets.

Funny world, isn't it?
