Probably the oldest Canadian veteran of the Great War passed away at Grand Forks Hospital last Saturday evening in the death of Charles Frederick Harrigan, who succumbed rather suddenly, at the age of 71 years. With commendable patriotic ambition deceased enlisted for active service when 67 years of age and by clouding his real age was successful in getting to France with the Forestry battalion. He was two years with the military forces.
Deceased was one of the old-timers of Grand Forks, coming here 23 years ago, though he has personally done considerable travelling through the province since that time. Since troubled with asthmatic bronchitis which had become more chronic recently. He was taken to the hospital about a fortnight ago but was able to be around the institution chatting with the other patients. He had been about as usual on Saturday. Mrs. Harrigan had spent part of the afternoon with him, leaving about five. At 6 p.m., shortly after supper. he expired suddenly, the immediate cause being heart failure.
Besides his widow deceased leaves three daughters and one son-Mrs. George Russell of Nelson, Mrs. Noel Kelsey and Miss Margaret Harrigan of Grand Forks, and Fred Harrigan. of Marcus.
The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon from Knox Presbyterian church, where services were held, to the city cemetery and was largely attended. Rev. Hillis Wright officiated.
Pte. Harrigan had previously served in the Fenian Raids of 1866 and 1870 with the 50th Huntingdon (Quebec) Borderers.
