Pte. F. Grant is Killed
Widow and Two Young Children Left to Mourn the Loss of Soldier Father.
Earlscourt, July 17.--Another of the many heroic families of Earlscourt has felt the barbarous effects of the war, and now there is another widow and two more fatherless children. This time the fates have decreed that the hand of death should strike into the midst of a Harvie avenue home and snatch the husband and father, Pte. F. Grant, who has been gallantly doing his duty in the thick of that wild hail of lead on Flanders' battle-churned fields. For several long months he had been fighting the brave fight, where privates and officers alike summon their ebbing strength even in their dying hours to raise themselves on hands and knees that they may once more cheer their comrades forward.
He has gone, but little Alice, three years of age, and Baby Willie, just one year old, remain to hear in after years the brave deeds of their heroic father as related by a brave mother. Both Alice and Willie were born in Canada, but they will always hold the name of Scotland dear, for it is the native land of their father, who during his several years' residence in Canada, followed the occupation of carpenter. And so the residence at 300 Harvie avenue is in mourning.
Pte. Frederick Grant, 138293, was born in Banff, Scotland. He died June 18th, 1917. A photo of Pte. Frederick Grant and his daughter Alice was posted on his Canadian Virtual War Memorial entry:
