Seasoned Soldier is Sergt. Edward Nicholson, and Wears Many Medals

On the staff at Base Military Hospital* there is one veteran who has seen active service in more campaigns than probably any other staff non-commissioned officer in the ranks of the Canadian militia. The name of the seasoned soldier is Sergt. Edward Nicholson, who officiates as the assistant registrar at the base.

Sergt. Nicholson enlisted in the Somerset Light Infantry during 1893 and was transferred to the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1894, proceeding to Egypt for active service, he served all through the Sudanese campaign in 1898 and returned in 1899. In October of the same year he went to South Africa, where he remained until the close of occupation in November, 1902. In 1906, before coming to Canada, he received his honorable discharge from the R.A.M.C.

Sergt. Nicholson holds the following decorations: the Sudan and Khedive medals for active service in Egypt, and the King's and Queen's medals with five bars for active service in South Africa.

During 1906 Sergt. Nicholson acted as ambulance Instructor to the 6th Battalion, Gloucester regiment. He enlisted with the Canadian overseas forces in October, 1916, and previous to doing so was with the Robt. Simpson Company, Ltd. in the accountant's department.

Of the many popular N.C.O.'s at the base none are more popular than Sergt. Nicholson. His smile is perennial and he is always endeavoring to start something to make the boys more comfortable.
