Canadian Nurses Respond to Call for Work Overseas.

The Toronto World

Canadian military attestations may be found for some of these Nursing Sisters.   The date of enlistment on these attestations is often later than this date (1916) which could give one the impression that the individual in question had enlisted later in the war.  In fact, it appears that by the time they enlisted with the Canadian Army Medical Corps, they had already served for a year or more with the Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service (QAIMNS).  This experience was recorded in many cases on the Canadian military attestations.    In the case of this group, some of the locations served while with the QAIMNS were in Malta and Salonika.

On the other hand, there may not be a Canadian attestation available for some of these Canadian Nursing Sisters, as they may have only served with the QAIMNS and had not  subsequently enlisted into the CAMC.   Therefore, in such a case, a Canadian Nursing Sister may not have been counted when totalling the numbers of Canadian women serving as Nursing Sisters in the first World War.

The names below are linked to their Canadian Great War Project database entry, and, if applicable, linked within that entry to their Canadian military attestation.
