Value of Straw

Huntingdon Gleaner

Dated: September 20, 1918

France, September 20, 1918

It is been raining off and on all morning but is beginning to clear up again. The roof was leaking so I had to postpone writing a will try it again.

Three days ago, Hukins, our canteen manager, asked me to go with him to the divisional wholesale canteen to get a stock. It was a long trip and we only got a small supply. It was 6 p.m. by then so we decided to stay all night. We couldn't get a bed so swiped some oat straw and made a bed in an old out building and had a good sleep. I never realized the warmth of straw until I came to France.

I was warned last night to be ready to go on a gas course so will be away for a couple of weeks. I hope the school is in a good town as the change always is good.

The mail is coming slowly and irregularly -- letters mailed about the last of August arriving one day and others dated September 4 arriving a few days later. The parcels are worse as they are rarely coming at all.

Watson
