DEATH OF GENERAL SIR ARTHUR CURRIE

THE KING'S MESSAGE

We regret to learn from our Ottawa Correspondent that GENERAL SIR ARTHUR CURRIE, Principal of McGill University, Montreal, and commander of the Canadian Corps in the War, died early yesterday morning in the Royal Victoria Hospital at Montreal. He was 57. Lord Bessborough, Governor-General of Canada, has sent the following message to Lady Currie on behalf of the King:- "I am commanded by his Majesty the King to convey to yourself and the members of your family the heartfelt sympathy of his Majesty and of her Majesty the Queen."

The following telegram of sympathy has been sent to the Canadian Minister of National Defence, Ottawa, on the death of General Sir Arthur Currie:

The Army Council mourn with you the loss of the distinguished soldier who led the forces of the Dominion in France and Flanders, and the British Army honours the memory of a comrade in arms who shared the trials and the ultimate triumph. They ask that an expression of their profound sympathy may be conveyed to the family of the late General. The Secretary of State desires to add his personal condolences.

UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR WAR.

Our Ottawa Correspondent telegraphs that Sir Arthur Currie will be buried at Mount Royal Cemetery, Montreal, next Tuesday. The body will lie in state on Monday in Christ Church Cathedral, and on Tuesday morning there will he a service in the Cathedral under the auspices of McGill University, and in the afternoon a full military funeral.
