Edwin Francis Leahy was born at Saint-Anicet, Quebec, on 16 May 1895. A farmer, he joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force at Montreal on 26 July 1918 under the Military Service Act and served as a Private, regimental number 3090474, with the 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Quebec Regiment. His father, John Leahy of Saint-Anicet, was named as his next of kin. Leahy served in Canada and was struck off strength on 26 August 1918 on return to the Registrar's Records.
