Notes

Sapper Ranger was selected by Lieut. Johnson to accompany him in the attack on VIMY RIDGE, on the morning of April 9th, 1917. Their object was to make a rapid survey of the captured line as soon as possible after it was occupied, for this purpose they accompanied the 3rd wave of the attacking infantry. After passing the enemy's second line, a nest of Germans was encountered, and, during the work of mopping up, Lieut. Johnson was wounded.

The mission was entrusted to Sapper Ranger who went forward to the objective and began his survey, but was wounded in the leg before the work was complete. He got back to our front-line and while helping a party of stretcher-bearers carry in the wounded, he was instantly killed by enemy shell-fire.
