Notes
He left school at age 14 after six years of public school and was working before enlistment, including as a weaver in a Valleyfield cotton factory. His first wartime enlistment under E38102 began 14 August 1940 and ended 10 April 1941 after his age was found to have been falsely declared/under age. The service record contains conflicting birth information: wartime documents commonly use 22 January 1923, while a post-death family estate declaration gives 22 January 1924. Veterans Affairs Canada identifies his actual birth as 21 January 1924 and specifically notes that he had consistently stated 22 January 1923 during service.
[Previous notes - manual reconciliation required]
Baptized Joseph Adélard Jean Louis Garant, he served under the name Jean Louis Garant. Son of Guillaume (aka William) Garant and Marie Grondin, from St-Georges, Beauce, Québec. He always stated that he was born on January 22, 1923. He had previously enlisted on August 14, 1940, in Quebec City, Quebec, with the 16th Company of the Canadian Forestry Corps, serial number E-38102. Due to his young age, he was discharged from the army on April 10, 1941, in Quebec City. On May 15, 1942, in Montreal South, Quebec, he re-enlisted in the Châteauguay Regiment, service number D-51341. The army used both service numbers on the forms, one on one form and the other on another. On June 29, 1943, he embarked with Force M to take part in the Allied landing in Sicily, Operation Husky. He landed on the beach on the 11th. On September 10, 1943, he set foot on the Italian mainland at Reggio di Calabria. He fell ill on September 12 and was evacuated to the 2nd Military General Hospital in Tripoli, Libya, where he died of pleuropneumonia and osteomyelitis of the sternum. He was buried there on October 1, 1943.
Additional Service Notes
Joseph Adelard Jean Louis Garant first served under number E38102 after enlisting on 14 August 1940; that enlistment ended on 10 April 1941 after an under-age/false-age issue. He re-enlisted for active service at Montreal South on 15 May 1942 as D51341 and served as a Private. After training with Le Régiment de Châteauguay (Mitrailleuses), he passed through No. 1 Transit Camp at Debert, proceeded overseas and joined the Royal 22e Régiment on 12 May 1943. He embarked from the United Kingdom on 29 June 1943 and was taken on strength of the Canadian Army in the Mediterranean on 30 June. Veterans Affairs Canada identifies this movement as Force M for Operation Husky: he landed in Sicily on 11 July and on the Italian mainland at Reggio di Calabria on 10 September. He fell ill on 12 September and was evacuated to the 2nd Military General Hospital at Tripoli, Libya. He died there on 30 September 1943 of acute pneumonia and osteomyelitis of the sternum. His awards card records the 1939-45 Star, Italy Star, War Medal 1939-45 and Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp.
