Service Biography

John Edwards Lawrenson was born at Montreal, Quebec, on 14 February 1915. Before the war he completed Grade X in a Montreal public school and worked as a clerk for The Steel Company of Canada Ltd. He served briefly with the 5th Anti-Aircraft Battery of the Non-Permanent Active Militia before enlisting for active service at Montreal on 14 August 1940 as D-10148. Serving with the Royal Canadian Artillery, he embarked from Halifax in February 1941 for overseas service with light anti-aircraft artillery and was employed on the guns. His service included the United Kingdom, Sicily, Italy and Holland. He became a Lance-Sergeant in August 1944 and later served with the 2nd Canadian Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. He returned to Canada in 1945 and was discharged on demobilization at Montreal South on 6 November 1945.

English was his only recorded language. The rehabilitation record states that he had arranged to return to his former employer after discharge.

Enlisted in the Canadian Active Service Force at Montreal on 14 August 1940 after brief service with the 5th Anti-Aircraft Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery, Non-Permanent Active Militia. He was struck off strength in Canada for embarkation at Halifax on 16 February 1941 and taken on strength of the Canadian Army Overseas on 17 February. He disembarked at Gourock, Scotland, in late February 1941; surviving records give 25 and 28 February. He served overseas with light anti-aircraft artillery and was employed on the guns, with service in the United Kingdom, Sicily, Italy and Holland. He became a Lance-Sergeant on 18 August 1944 and his last non-repatriation unit was the 2nd Canadian Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery. He entered the repatriation stream at the end of August 1945, returned to Canada in September, and was discharged on demobilization at Montreal South on 6 November 1945.
