Service Biography
George Arthur Hampson was born at Athelstan, Quebec, on 27 February 1916. He completed Grade 11 and matriculation at Shawville, Quebec, and before the war worked as a mill foreman. He enlisted at St. Johns, Quebec, on 9 September 1939 as A-6001 with the Royal Canadian Regiment. In 1940, Hampson deployed to France immediately after Dunkirk as part of the short-lived Second British Expeditionary Force. The Department of National Defence’s official lineage states specifically that the RCR went to France on 14 June 1940, advancing to a point beyond Laval before being recalled. Rising through the ranks from Private, he became a Sergeant before being selected for officer training in 1942. After attending the Officer Training Centre at Brockville he was commissioned as a Lieutenant effective 10 October 1942 and later served with Canadian infantry training and reinforcement organizations in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. On 4 September 1943 he married Hilda Kathleen Widdicombe at Dartmouth, Devon, England. He was promoted Acting Captain and then Captain in the Canadian Infantry Corps on 14 June 1945. A Medical Board subsequently found him unfit for further service because of continuing physical limitations, including symptoms associated with a 1943 right-ankle fracture, and he was struck off strength on 5 September 1945. George Arthur Hampson died at Pointe-Claire, Quebec, on 15 April 2005.
