Additional Service Notes

At attestation was noted as underweight, but fit
Died during a normal training flight to carry out a bombing exercise out to sea on the afternoon of 10 December 1942 in the company of his Wireless Operator/Air Gunner Sergeant T. Lawson (NO. 1305442) in a ultee A-31 Vengeance dive bomber, an American-made WWII dive bomber. Search parties were sent out and no trace of aircraft or occupants found.
They were to engage in dive bombing practice from 10'000 feet in the immediate vicinity of churma Island off Cape Monze at 14:15 hours. After take off until immediatly prior to going into the dive to drop the bombs, Sgt. Lawton was in R/T communication withthe unit signals section. His last message being "We are about to drop our bombs, will call you up immediatly afterwards" or words to that effect. It is likely that Sgt. Carmichael failed to pull out of his bombing dive in time to avoid the sea. This would have been possible as height is most deceptive over water.
He had been atatched to the No 100 Squadron, Drigh Rd. Karachi (now Pakistan)
