Service Biography
Nursing Sister Anna McCaul Hiscock (5 December 1893 – 11 April 1918)
Canadian Army Medical Corps
Born in Kingston, Ontario on 5 December 1893, Anna McCaul Hiscock was the daughter of Edgar Hiscock and Mary Boyd Carroll of 102 Barrie Street, Kingston. She trained as a nurse at the Kingston General Hospital Training School and entered service as a Nursing Sister with the Canadian Army Medical Corps on 1 June 1916.
Only a few months after reporting for duty she developed symptoms of pulmonary tuberculosis, a disease to which military nurses were acutely exposed. On 20 October 1916 she was admitted to the Laurentian Sanatorium at Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Quebec, where her condition was described as “chronic” and “advanced.” She remained under military medical care for over a year before being invalided to her family home at 102 Barrie Street, Kingston, on 19 March 1918. Her discharge from the CAMC followed on 30 March 1918.
Nursing Sister Hiscock died of her illness at Kingston on 11 April 1918, less than two weeks after leaving military service. She is buried in Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston. Her death was a direct consequence of illness contracted while serving with the Canadian Army Medical Corps during the First World War.
