Service Biography

Joseph Jacques Charles Mercier was born in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, on 27 May 1917. He attended Jardin de l'Enfance in Montreal, Collège de Valleyfield, and Université de Montréal, where he completed a classical course and earned a B.A. before studying law. He also held summer jobs, including surveyor work and work with the Quebec Department of Health/Public Works. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at Montreal on 15 October 1941 and trained as a pilot in Canada and Britain. He later served as a Flight Sergeant pilot with 432 Squadron. On 25 June 1943 he was reported missing after air operations over Wuppertal, Germany, and was subsequently presumed dead. His body was not recovered and he is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial.

Notes

Completed primary schooling at Jardin de l'Enfance in Montreal. Attended Collège de Valleyfield, then Université de Montréal, where he completed the classical course/B.A., followed by law studies from 1939 to 1941. His enlistment application records summer civilian employment as a surveyor and general labourer, including work at Caughnawaga and with the Quebec Department of Health; he was a student when he enlisted. He spoke French and English, with some knowledge of German. He enjoyed hockey, swimming and tennis and listed photography as a hobby. He smoked about 10 cigarettes a day and drank alcohol sometimes. Medical history recorded pneumonia in 1938, occasional sore throats and colds, and childhood mumps and whooping cough. He wore glasses; examination recorded defective vision but found him fit for aircrew duties. The general medical examination described his physique as athletic and mentality as standard, with no marks, scars, wounds, injuries or operations recorded. His service book records medical classification A1B and blood group O. A January 1942 medical review noted his choice as pilot or transfer to the Navy. His enlistment declaration records no children, no debts, no previous rejection from His Majesty's armed services for physical unfitness, and no disability pension. His conduct sheet records one minor offence at No. 13 SFTS: reporting late for the 0745 parade.

Father: Joseph Honoré Alfred Édouard Mercier, lawyer/minister, deceased before enlistment. Mother: Marie Jeanne Fréchette (Jeanne Mercier). Parents married in Montreal on 21 April 1903. The 1944 estate return explicitly records no widow and no children. It also records four living brothers and one deceased brother, and five living sisters with one sister deceased in infancy. His mother stated that a $50 monthly assignment from his pay had been paid to her until notice of his disappearance. She knew of no life-insurance policy apart from the possibility of one taken through the aviation department. His will left his whole estate to his mother. Postwar correspondence gives her address as 3474 Côte-des-Neiges, Apt. 7B, Montreal, Quebec.
