Additional Service Notes

Died of injuries sustained in an accident in flying operations off the coast of British Columbia (about one mile south of Pachena Point, B.C.) from RCAF Station Tofino, BC. flying as part of the "Dawn Patrol".
His Hawker Hurricane aircraft #5423 suffered engine failure and ditched in the water one mile south of Pachena Point, British Columbia. The aircraft was forced to ditch approximately one mile south of Pachena Point. P/O Ness successfully evacuated into his dinghy; however, he succumbed to injuries before rescue crews arrived. Search and rescue operations were promptly initiated from RCAF Station Tofino but were unable to recover P/O Ness alive.

B.C. death certificate lists cause of death as laceration of the brain and fracture of the spine.
