Nursing Sister Gertrude Frazee

Gertrude enlisted 1 Feb 1917 Army Medical Corps re-inforcements and passed her medical test at the Military Hospital in Dartmouth Nova Scotia on 13 Feb 1917. She was"Taken On Strength" TOS 22 Feb 1917 She left left Halifax 7 March 1917 Gertrude was posted in Liverpool arriving 16 March 1917 She returned to Canada from Liverpool 26 August 1919 on board the S.S. Celtic SL 107 via New York. She was Struck of Strength SOS 11 Sept 1919. Gertrude moved to British Columbia and lived with her brother Weston Costello Frazee, who moved to Vancouver in 1935. Weston was an executive with the Royal Banks in Montreal. Weston died in 1953. Gertrude worked with her brother Frederick Cavendish Frazee who was a Chiropractor and had his practice on Bridgeport Road on Lulu Island (Richmond BC) I had moved to Vancouver in 1975 and wish I had known about Gertrude at that time, Gertrude never marries and it is said she was engaged at one time and he was lost in the Titanic sinking April 1912. I would have visited her. Learning she was of sharp mind up to the day she passed away at the Shaughnessy Hospital in Vancouver. BC. My grandmother was her namesake. Gertrude Alice Frazee

Gertrude Frazee, 1884- 1980
b 27 Mar 1884 Dartmouth, Nova Scotia d 21 Feb 1980 Vancouver. B.C. Gertrude never married and was a spinster and took Nurses training in Halifax. Her religion listed as Universalist. She joined in the C.E.F. ( Canadian Expeditionary Force, Army Medical Corps Re-Inforcements #4, as Nursing Sister ) 1 Feb 1917 As a sister nurse during in the Great War. She was taken of strength 19 Sept 1919 On enlisting at age 33 she was 5'- 5.5" 134 lbs. Gertrude lists her next of kin and residence as Mrs. Laura Maud Louise Hart, her sister of Rosebank, Halifax. Gertrude went West to British Columbia & worked with her brother Frederick Cavendish Frazee with a Chiropractor office on Lu Lu Island, Richmond. Located on Bridgeport Road. She also lived in Vancouver for a time with her brother Weston Costello Frazee. Weston, a banker died of from a slip and fall on his back stairs of his home in Vancouver in 1953. Gertrude died at the Shaughnessy Veterans Hospital in 1980 Vancouver, I wish I had of know as I had moved to Vancouver (Burnaby) in August 1975. I would have enjoyed meeting her. - Ron Cairns

Gertrude was never "Dot", her next older sister, Laura M.L.(Frazee) Hart was always "Dot". Gertrude died in Shaughnessy Veterans Hospital, aged 94-1/2. She'd been living on the 7th floor in a high-rise in South Granville. She was quite deaf. She'd run a bath, then turned on the TV (with loud speaker earphones) while the bath filled she . An hour or so later with flooding 7 floors down, tenants pounding on the door, the building super finally produced a master key, and found her blissfully enjoying a good program.Gertrude consequently decided to move to a nearby boarding house where she'd be on the ground floor and could continue to look after herself. She was always independent and competent-- but near the end her short-term memory became a bit unreliable. She was a remarkable woman. She referred to only a couple of serious beau's. One had died on the Titanic Disaster of April 1912.
Steven Frazee, from Toronto Rowland's son also knew Gertrude well and can not recall the Titanic connection.
